The Concordia Educational Foundation has contracted with Craig Mellendorf of SFC Estate Coaching to help families navigate through the process of creating a will and estate plan. Craig educates and coaches you to the point of becoming “Attorney Ready” with a plan and then puts you in touch with an attorney to execute your will and estate plan.

The initial meeting is one hour, with a follow-up session normally taking between 30-45 minutes.

Steps Offered in Coaching

Step 1—Data Gathering: Disclosure

The first appointment will be to gather all the necessary information to create the personal plan. We will gather family information, professional advisors information, providing for children, power of attorneys, gift planning information and financial information.

After receiving this information our team will produce a plan based on what was discovered during the first appointment.

Step 2—Presentation: Consider/Envision
Each donor will receive a personalized plan for their family. During the presentation all material will be reviewed to assure accuracy. Options for charitable giving will be considered. Many times, these options will allow donor’s to be charitable in ways they had never envisioned. It will be at the donor’s discretion to determine any charitable gifts within their will or estate plan. After the presentation, contact with the attorney will be encouraged to complete the necessary documents.

Step 3—Decisions

Some estate plans will show examples of charitable vehicles that are not in the mainstream for typical families. The result is that it usually takes between a couple of days to two weeks for families to make a decision as to whether to use this charitable vehicle or not.

Step 4—Attorney: Appointment One

The individual or family will meet with their attorney, who will review and clarify what the family would like to accomplish within their estate plan. After the meeting is complete, the attorney will create a draft of the necessary documents to complete the plan and send to the family. The family will review to make sure this is what they want to accomplish with their estate plan and either revise the documents or send them back for the final state.

Step 5—Attorney: Appointment Two

The individual or family will return to the attorney to sign, and the necessary documents and the process will be considered complete.

Services Offered Are:

  1. Complimentary—Works WITH financial advisors, NOT in place of them.
  2. Confidential—All information is kept discreetly between the family and the SFC Estate Coach.
  3. Educational—Families will be competent and educated when finished.
